Emerging gang at San Juan.
December 2013
An attempted burglary in the city of San Juan gave discovery toa new gang. Gang intelligence officers said the gang goes by the name West Side Pharr. The group formed about three years ago and its members are as young as 13.
"We have seen quite a bit of activity in the last year ... from burglary to several taggings and graffiti in our area," San Juan Police Sgt. Rolando Garcia said.
Garcia and his fellow officers arrested one of the teens Tuesday on a stretch of West Chaparral Street. The 15-year-old is accused of breaking into a home and trying to steal an all-terrain vehicle. They said he is a member of the gang.
Having one less teen roaming the streets, though, is hardly comforting for residents like Marco Antonio Santiago. He said the gang left its mark all over his cedar fence.
Santiago said he is frustrated with the gang's actions. He said the young thugs have a proclivity to damage private property. He wants police to keep rounding up the delinquents.
"Right now, they are into petty crimes," Santiago said. "But they are bound to graduate into major crimes."
